MA, doctoral student
The need for research stepped into my graphic design studies when coming to realize that I don’t know how to deal with clients’ opinions in the design process. I needed more tools to understand the process and to ground the decisions.
The research focus of my Ph.D. is on visual production and the design process. The aim is an understanding of the impact of context in design. Design is not only individual activity of designers, but also collective activity, where different people are involved.
The cases included are a visual update of a magazine, illustrating the Art Directors challenges in a changing media organization, and two workshops organized by think tank Demos Helsinki, where new business concepts are developed. The research makes use of concepts from activity theory and ethnography is used to collect data.
